The Centre for Advanced Training in Earth System Science and Climate (CAT-ESSC) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences hosted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is looking for scientific trainees with outstanding academic background. IITM is committed to develop world class research expertise for understanding and exploring unresolved scientific issues in climate sciences. The other institutions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences such as Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE), Integrated Coastal Marine Area Management (ICMAM) also specialize in different areas of earth system sciences and technology. The main objective of CAT_ESSC is to generate a large pool of trained and dedicated earth system scientists with in-depth hands-on expertise on individual physical processes of the land, ocean, atmosphere, biosphere and cryosphere with special emphasis on climate modeling. For the motivated candidates, the training will offer considerable scope to realize their full potential in this highly challenging field. The candidates recruited will be provided in any one of the above Institutes as Scientists in suitable grades (Scientist B/C) based on their basic qualifications and performance. Trainees will be encouraged to pursue M.Tech. and/or Ph.D. program after placement with facilities for career enhancement.


 The candidates applying for the training should process M.Sc / MS / M.Tech Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, applied Physics, any area of Earth Sciences or any equivalent disciplines, with Physics and Mathematics at the B.Sc. level or B.Tech. /BE / M.Tech. / ME in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electronics or Electrical Engineering with 60% or more marks at both the graduate and post graduate level. The candidate should be CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET) or the IIT Graduate Admission Test in Engineering (GATE) qualified. Those who are appearing for the final exams for the qualifying degree or NET / GATE may also apply subject to the condition that they produce the final certificates if and when called for the interview. The applicants should be of Indian Origin and the upper age limit is fixed as 28 years (30 for M.Tech) as on 15th April, 2012 with relaxation as per eligibility.

One of the greatest challenges of Practical importance is the useful prediction of monsoon on weather and climate time scales. To address the problem of paucity of skilled scientific manpower required for improving the quality of weather and climate forecasts in the country, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is embarking on a world class training program in the field of Earth System Sciences and Climate with a view to understand the Science of climate Variability and change and to build capacity to make world class weather and climate forecasts with particular focus on the Indian monsoon. A
Large pool of trained and dedicated climate and earth System Modelers is proposed to be created through this program. In depth hands-on expertise building on individual physical processes of the land, ocean, atmosphere, biosphere and cryosphere is envisaged The program, however, will go beyond the conventional training on individual systems and address weather and climate as processes arising from interactions between the component systems. The Centre will have its own campus with all training and other infrastructural facilities In addition to the already available advanced facilities / Systems at IITM and other institutions of MoES, advanced High performance Computing facility and other state-of –the art infrastructure for Scientific research will be made available for the Centre.

Meritorious students with master’s in science or bachelors in engineering degree will be eligible for this integrated degree program leading to M.Tech and / or Ph .D Admissions to this job linked training program will be based on rigorous national eligibility tests and the first batch will start in July/August 2011 .The announcement for induction of trainees will be made in January, 2011. The Selected trainees will receive consolidated monthly pay of $25,000/- on entry and on successful completion of the program, will be placed in any one of the institutions of MoES viz . IITM, IMD, INCOLS, NIOT, NCAOR, NCMRWF, ICMAM and CMLRE or other leading research centers at appropriate scientific positions.

The Centre initially established by IITM, Will be a leading centre of research in tropical meteorology with excellent environment for academic activities and research in fundamental and applied aspects of land –ocean atmosphere interactions in the tropics. IITM has an efficient pool of scientists in theoretical and modeling studies strongly supported by diagnostic and field observational studies It has strong linkages and collaboration with various national and international organizations and it has academic programs leading to M.Sc., M.Tech and Ph.D . degrees. It has state-of-the-art advanced infrastructural facilities like High Performance Computer (HPC) System with 70 TF Peak performance and have suite of state of the art instruments for atmospheric and oceanographic observations as well as palaeoclimatic studies.

The Advanced Training Centre located in Pune, will have the best of the national faculty and regular international / national visiting faculty to guide the trainees. Starting with a few, a core faculty of about 20 outstanding scientists is proposed for the Centre. In association with the scientists of IITM, the core faculty  would be expected to conduct cutting edge research on the grand challenge mentioned above and inspire the trainees using theoretical, modeling and observational techniques. Currently, the Advanced Training Centre is looking for highly qualified faculty in the areas of earth system science, climate change research, climate dynamics and climate modeling. Passed candidates are eligible for this course. Selection is based on First come first serve basis.

22.5% seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates for whom no fee will be charged subject to production of two photo copies of Caste Certificate duly attested by Gazetted officer. A caution deposit of Rs.1000/- is to be paid along with application in shape of Demand Draft which will be refunded after successful completion of Training with minimum 85% attendance. Caste Certificate in original from competent authority is to be produced for verification at the time of admission which may be re-verified from the Issuing Authority.
